FORUM for Urban Design organized a competition for architecture and urban planning asking; how to transform Red Hook (Brooklyn) into “the most bicycle friendly neighbourhood in New York”. In collaboration with the New York-based agency; We Architechture Goodmorning Technology submitted a proposal.
As part of our process to create a unique and exciting area to live in and to visit, we conducted severe user - and field studies. This resulted in the development of three key users/personas: A local, a visitor and a hobby/enthusiast cyclist.
The three users, with different needs and goals, helped us identifying which kinds of interventions
and tools we had to utilize in order to create the right proposal.
Based on the personas´ needs and our field studies of the area the final proposal takes the viewer on a journey - where the area as a whole is considered into the overall solution. Biking park, LED enlightened bikes lanes full servicestation Sky bar and kissing benches are all part of the Red Hook biking-experience. The presentation also included a short film.
The proposal received an Honorable Mention from the jury and the presentation was represented at an exhibition in New York.
On of the main focus areas was on how to create an access ramp for Smith St. Station which would make it easier and safer for cyclists to use the subway when bringing the bicycle along.
The proposal integrated both the logistic and pragmatic elements of the solution as well as delivering an overall positive and safe experience when using the access ramp.
